““When the time comes, let their final moments be filled with the things they have always known: love, comfort and home.””
Our Process – What to Expect
Gentle guidance, from your first call through to bringing your pet home again
When you are facing the possibility of saying goodbye to a much-loved pet, it can be difficult to know what to do next. You may have questions, you may be unsure whether the time is right, or you may simply need someone to talk you through what to expect.
At Paws Forever, we are here to gently guide you through each step. There is no pressure to have everything decided before you contact us. We understand how emotional and overwhelming this time can be, and we will take things at a pace that feels right for you and your family.
Whether you are saying goodbye to a beloved dog, cat or rabbit, our aim is to make the experience as peaceful, personal and dignified as possible.
-
The first step is simply getting in touch.
You are welcome to contact us even if you are not yet certain that it is time. Sometimes families just need to talk through what they are seeing at home, ask questions about quality of life, or understand what home euthanasia involves before making any decisions.
We can discuss your pet, how they have been managing, any changes you have noticed and any concerns you may have.
There is no obligation to make a booking simply because you have contacted us. Sometimes having a conversation and knowing there is a plan available can provide a little reassurance during an otherwise uncertain time.
-
Every pet and every family is different.
Before arranging a visit, we will take some time to learn about your pet and understand your circumstances. You can tell us about their health, personality, mobility, comfort and anything else you feel is important.
This is also an opportunity to ask questions.
You may want to know what signs can indicate that the time is approaching, what happens during euthanasia, whether children or other pets can be present, what you should prepare beforehand, or what aftercare options are available.
There are no silly questions, and you do not need to worry about becoming emotional. These conversations are part of helping you feel as prepared and supported as possible,
-
When you feel that the time has come, we can arrange a home visit.
We will confirm the details with you and talk about anything you may wish to consider before we arrive.
You do not need to create a special environment unless you would like to. One of the beautiful things about home euthanasia is that your pet can remain somewhere familiar and comfortable.
For a dog, that might be their favourite bed, the couch or a sunny place in the garden.
For a cat, it may be curled up on your bed, resting on your lap or tucked into their favourite blanket.
For a rabbit, it may be within their familiar room or enclosure, surrounded by familiar smells and, where appropriate, their bonded companion.
The most important thing is simply that your pet feels safe.
-
When we arrive at your home, there is no rush.
We will introduce ourselves, meet your pet and talk with you before anything happens. We will explain the process and make sure you understand what to expect.
You can ask questions at any point.
The exact process may vary slightly depending on your pet and their individual needs, but our priority is always to minimise fear, discomfort and stress.
Medication is generally given first to help your pet become deeply relaxed and sleepy. You can remain beside them, pat them, hold them, speak to them or simply sit quietly together.
Once your pet is peacefully asleep and you are ready, the final medication is administered.
You can stay with your pet throughout the entire process if you wish.
There is no need to hurry your goodbye.
-
After your pet has passed, you may spend some quiet time with them.
Some families want to sit together, hold their pet, say a prayer, play a favourite song or simply remain beside them for a little while. Children may wish to say goodbye in their own way, and other pets may sometimes benefit from being given an opportunity to see or smell their companion.
There is no single “right” way to say goodbye.
This is your pet, your family and your moment. We will respect whatever feels most meaningful and comfortable for you.
-
When you are ready, we can help with your pet’s aftercare.
If you have chosen cremation, we can gently take your pet into our care and coordinate the arrangements on your behalf. We understand how difficult this moment can be, and your pet will always be handled with dignity, gentleness and respect.
Depending on the aftercare you have chosen, there may also be options for keepsakes or memorial items to help you remember your pet.
We can discuss these choices with you beforehand so that you do not feel you need to make difficult decisions immediately after saying goodbye.
-
For families who choose an individual cremation, your pet’s ashes will be returned once the cremation process has been completed.
We understand that collecting ashes can be another emotional step in the grieving process. For this reason, we arrange the crematorium to personally deliver your pet’s ashes back to your home, so you do not need to make another difficult trip.
It is a small gesture, but one we believe matters.
From the moment you first contact us until the moment your pet comes home again, our aim is to make the journey as gentle as we possibly can.
You Don’t Have to Know When You Call
One of the most important things we want families to know is that you do not need to have made the decision before contacting us.
You may be ready to make a booking.
You may think the time is getting close.
Or you may simply need some guidance.
Whatever stage you are at, you are welcome to reach out.
We are here to listen, answer your questions and help you understand the options available to you—without pressure.
When the time does come, we will be there to help you give your much-loved companion a peaceful goodbye, surrounded by the people, places and familiar comforts they have known throughout their life.
From your first conversation to bringing their ashes safely home again, your pet will be treated with the same gentleness, dignity and respect we would want for our own.
““The love we share with our pets doesn’t end when they leave us. It simply changes shape.””
